I consider Roland to be my first ‘real’ composition written in response to the most incredible guitarist I have met to date – Roland Dyens. In November 2015, Roland gave masterclasses before his concert at the MTU Cork School of Music. As a young player new to the world of classical guitar, I was admittedly quite intimidated. However, Roland saw past my technical shortcomings and was very encouraging of my playing and potential. His nighttime concert blew me away, particularly his mastery of harmonics and his profound musicality. I composed Roland within 3 days of this concert – to my shock and surprise, Roland came across the YouTube video and even left a comment to express his support and belief in me. One for the memory books!
