Clarinet & Piano Consortium

A consortium is when a group of people come together to support a new music project. In essence, consortium commissioning:

• Shares the cost of commissioning new works.

• Guarantees multiple performances for new pieces.

• Develops long-term relationships between commissioners and composers.

• Increases awareness of composers and performers of new music alike.

In late 2023, Kelsey and Aileen reached out and shared their interest in commissioning a clarinet duo for the 2024 ClarinetFest in Dublin. Over the course of a year, we worked together closely to create a vibrant and interactive work which champions the effect pedals I encountered as a blues guitarist, experimenting with the idea of what a limitless and “futuristic” clarinet might sound like. The compositional process was incredibly enjoyable and rewarding, with the world premiere at ClarinetFest and the chance to finally meet Aileen and Kelsey being the highlight! Following the success of our first collaboration, it only seemed right to follow up with a second! The aim of this new project is to produce a clarinet and piano piece that is geared towards university music students. By embracing a more familiar ensemble line-up, this project intends to explore the unique rhythmic and harmonic contours of guitar music which inform my compositional style in a more direct and accessible manner than before.
